A broad axe would be my preference for this job if I were to do it with hand tools. It allows for greater speed than the drawknives due to the swinging motion, and once you get good at it it will leave behind a quite smooth texture. And, remember that when you notch the ends of the logs to make them interlock the joints don't need to be tight, since it is highly traditional to caulk around all the seams and joints. The other hand tool that might be helpful for debarking would be a straight bladed adze. Also, for handling the logs I would reccomend that you buy a log jack. If you go to http://www.woodcraft.com they have several of these tools.

It's a simple pattern and you can strip piece it quickly. The next time you're near a good fabric store, such as Joann or Hancock ask if they have a quilting class. Or if you have a quilting store near you drop in and ask someone to explain it to you. It takes just minutes to pick it up when someone shows it to you.

I use a 2 gal pump up sprayer filled with the following solution. I find that it works as good, or better than most store bought mixes and is a lot cheaper.

In a 2gal sprayer add the following:
1 Gal. Generic Bleach
1 16oz bottle of Isopropal alcohol
1 good squirt of liquid dish detergent (Dawn,etc...)
Water to fill to full line.
Shake or stir to mix and pump up.

Makes a full 2 gal.

Use:
Spray on dry wood until soaked well. Allow to sit for about 10-15min. then either pressure wash or hose off with a spray nozzle. Will clean the wood to like new, and prevent new mold for about 6 months to 1 year.

Personally, I think the cost would be enormous plus your city might not allow a tin roof.

In our city, people going after the faux cabin look generally paint their homes a dark brown with green shutters; not louvered shutters, but those cutsey wooden ones with the pine tree cut outs. Landscaping also is pretty important...the dense look of shrubs such as willows paired with conifers, and wild flowers also help create the illusion. Rock streams, ferns, and so on can also help.

Oh, and cabins aren't always square....most of the ones I've seen are rectangular with a shed roofed wing coming off the back or sides.

You'll need at least 25 acres per person with a mountain-fed stream running through the land, preferably next to a national park so that you can participate in its diverse ecology. You might want to build a secure bunker to fill with supplies and provisions.
