Go Green in Your Log Cabin

Go Green in Your Log Cabin

Green building technologies are becoming more and more popular as concern for the environment grows. From creating new methods for utilizing solar energy to developing plug-in cars, we are all looking for ways to make a difference. If you are just beginning the construction of your log home, consider employing additional green technologies in the building phases, such as using northern white cedar for the exterior. Northern white cedar is known for having a low impact on the environment and for its durability. For those people already living in log cabins, there are still many little things you can do to save more energy.

If you are looking for additional ways to contribute to the efforts to save our environment from further deterioration, here are some ways you can help prior to and after the construction of your log cabin.

Create an Energy-efficient Design
When you are designing the layout of your home, consider the location and size of your windows. Homes that purposely incorporate sunlight into their designs will have significantly smaller electricity bills over time. Strategically place your windows where there is optimal light when you are in the blueprinting stage of building your house. You won’t have to keep as many lights on during the day because there will be natural sunlight available to you.

Use More Bamboo and Soy
When making decisions about how to decorate the interior of your home, make your choices with the environment in mind. You get countertops, tables, bowls, chairs, and kitchen carts that are made from bamboo. Bamboo is harder than maple, weighs less than oak, and yet is still sustainable and cost-effective. It gives your home a tropical, relaxed feel in addition to its environmental consciousness. Who couldn’t use something that brings out the simplicity in life? You can also help the environment by purchasing all-natural flooring. You can use bamboo in your flooring, too, or you can use salvaged wood. Wood floors are easier to clean and collect less allergens, great for people who struggle with allergies. You can even used soy-based insulation that can be sprayed into your walls as you are constructing your home. Soy-based insulation could reduce your gas bills an additional 30-50%.

Make Recycling a Priority
Many people don’t recycle simply because it’s inconvenient for them. They haven’t established a system for themselves. Many townships have recycling pickup days just like they have trash pickup days. If you live in one such area, take the initiative in utilizing the opportunity to recycle. Build recycling bins into your cabinetry where you will have ample space for them. With a designated location for your recycling, it will be a lot easier to make it a priority. You design a specific space for your garbage can anyway. Do the same for a recycling bin as well.

Use Energy Star Rated Products
From Energy Star insulation panels to appliances, there are numerous Energy Star approved things you can use to use electricity and heat more efficiently in your home. Appliances that have an Energy Star rating generally save 10-50% of the energy that other appliances use. You can still get top performance washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc., but save yourself some money every month by using them. Even battery chargers and computers can have an Energy Star rating.

Get Recycled Furniture
You don’t always have to buy new furniture every time you want to add a piece to your home. Auctions and yard sales are great places to find deals on quality merchandise. Just because someone doesn’t want it anymore doesn’t mean that it’s not worth having. All it may need is some refinishing and you’re set to go. There is also furniture made from recycled materials such as aluminum shavings, newspapers, tires, and barrels. These things can look great in your home and be conversation pieces when you have guests.

Plant a Tree
What log cabin is not surrounded by trees? If yours isn’t, make sure that your log cabin has the right ambiance by planting additional nears in the surrounding area. This is an easy thing you can do on a Saturday afternoon that will benefit the environment for decades to come. You’ll be helping the environment and creating a cozy atmosphere for your home.

Even if you choose just one of these things above, you are making a contribution. Start changing the way you view your energy usage by employing green technologies in your log home today.

Where Can I Find A Log Cabin To Rent This Winter?
I've googled and googled my brains out and I can't really find any information on log cabins in Canada… preferably Alberta but not necessary.
I'd like to rent it for a week sometime this winter. I'd rather it not be on a ranch or resort, as this would be somewhat of a honeymoon without the wedding and I'd like to be the only ones there.
Does anyone have a website with infor or own one of these things that they rent out? Thanks!

Green is a neutral color that compliments the natural wood tones of the cabin exterior. Like wood tones, green blends into nature, which is the whole concept of a cabin, to look rustic and outdoorsy.

Well, the size of a house has a huge impact on how much energy it consumes as well as how many materials it requires and how much land it gobbles up. In that respect, a 3000 sf house will automatically be greener than a 4000 sf house built exactly the same way. But if 4000 sf is your number, there are plenty of ways to minimize your impact on the environment. For example, you could site the house to maximize solar gain, use FSC-certified lumber, insulate the house carefully to minimize heating/cooling costs…….The following article from This Old House will give you an idea of what your options are.

And did you know that you can use trees to save energy, too? Here's how:

You'll need at least 25 acres per person with a mountain-fed stream running through the land, preferably next to a national park so that you can participate in its diverse ecology. You might want to build a secure bunker to fill with supplies and provisions.

Personally, I think the cost would be enormous plus your city might not allow a tin roof.

In our city, people going after the faux cabin look generally paint their homes a dark brown with green shutters; not louvered shutters, but those cutsey wooden ones with the pine tree cut outs. Landscaping also is pretty important…the dense look of shrubs such as willows paired with conifers, and wild flowers also help create the illusion. Rock streams, ferns, and so on can also help.

Oh, and cabins aren't always square….most of the ones I've seen are rectangular with a shed roofed wing coming off the back or sides.

I use a 2 gal pump up sprayer filled with the following solution. I find that it works as good, or better than most store bought mixes and is a lot cheaper.

In a 2gal sprayer add the following:
    1 Gal. Generic Bleach
1 16oz bottle of Isopropal alcohol
1 good squirt of liquid dish detergent (Dawn, etc…)
Water to fill to full line.
Shake or stir to mix and pump up.

    Makes a full 2 gal.

    Use:
Spray on dry wood until soaked well. Allow to sit for about 10-15min. then either pressure wash or hose off with a spray nozzle. Will clean the wood to like new, and prevent new mold for about 6 months to 1 year.

It's a simple pattern and you can strip piece it quickly. The next time you're near a good fabric store, such as Joann or Hancock ask if they have a quilting class. Or if you have a quilting store near you drop in and ask someone to explain it to you. It takes just minutes to pick it up when someone shows it to you.

A broad axe would be my preference for this job if I were to do it with hand tools. It allows for greater speed than the drawknives due to the swinging motion, and once you get good at it it will leave behind a quite smooth texture. And, remember that when you notch the ends of the logs to make them interlock the joints don't need to be tight, since it is highly traditional to caulk around all the seams and joints. The other hand tool that might be helpful for debarking would be a straight bladed adze. Also, for handling the logs I would reccomend that you buy a log jack. If you go to http://www.woodcraft.com they have several of these tools.
